Bringing Time Difference Back to Dublin
About the Talk
Time Difference (《時差》) is a non-fiction book about Ireland written in Traditional Han Charcters. In this talk, Hong Kong writer Ki Kwok (郭梓祺) introduces the ideas behind the book and reflects on his time studying Irish writing at Trinity College Dublin.
The book follows two threads: one explores Irish history, literature, and culture from the 16th century to the present, including the Home Rule Movement, the Irish War of Independence, the Irish Civil War, and the Troubles, and how writers such as Oscar Wilde, James Joyce, and Samuel Beckett responded to these moments through seemingly small stories that reveal deeper truths. The other recounts Kwok’s experiences studying in Dublin during 2022–2023, travelling across Ireland, and reflecting on cross-cultural writing. As a Hong Kong writer immersed in Irish literature, he also found unexpected echoes of his city’s struggles.
