Description

The 1st woman to climb Everest from both south & north sides Cathy O’Dowd from South Africa will tell us about her many adventures to some of the highest peaks in the world from the summit of Everest to her epic attempt of the unclimbed Mazeno Ridge on Nanga Parbat. Cathy O’Dowd answers the call of the mountains, whether tackling a new route on an 8000 metre peak or seeking out fresh powder at home in the Pyrenees, whether on foot or on skis or clinging by her fingertips to a rock face. Cathy has been on four expeditions to Everest, attempting the mountain from all three sides, having reached the summit twice. In the spring of 1996 she was the ‘token woman’ on the 1st South African Everest Expedition, climbing from Nepal via the South Col and reaching the summit on 25 May 1996. In the spring of 1998 she attempted the North Ridge route, via Tibet, stopping just four hours short of the summit to attempt to aid a dying American woman. In the spring of 1999 she returned to the North Ridge and this time reached the summit on 29 May 1999. In the spring of 2003 she attempted to climb a new route on the notorious east face of Everest, but finally allowed common sense to prevail and backed off. Everest has opened many doors for her over the years and for that she will always remember it with great affection, despite all the dangers and difficulties, the traumas and controversies. A passionate storyteller, she will share with you her adventures through her stunning photographs and inspiring tales and why she does it – just for the love of it. www.cathyodowd.com
