Album Info:

Charlie’s journey into the world of singing unfolds against the backdrop of his early 20s while immersed in jazz guitar studies at Newpark in Dublin. Often compared to the iconic Chet Baker, Charlie's venture into vocals emerged from the necessity of funding his music education. The dilemma was clear—venues craved singers, not student jazz guitarists.

In a twist of fate, Charlie secured a gig on the condition that he sang while accompanying himself on the guitar. Despite never having sung a note before, he embraced the challenge, drawing inspiration from the timeless 'Chet Baker Sings' catalogue. This marked the inception of Charlie's vocal career—a journey that began with self-accompanied solo performances and a deep dive into the vocal repertoire of jazz standards.

Adding layers to the album's inspiration, Charlie finds influence in records resonating from his childhood home. Notably, Julie London's 'Julie Is Her Name' highlights the delicate interplay of guitar and voice, featuring the masterful guitar playing of Barney Kessel. Adding another layer to his influences, 'Sarah + 2' by Sarah Vaughan further underscores the intimate harmony of guitar and voice, once again showcasing the brilliance of Barney Kessel. The profound impact of Kessel on Charlie's accompanying style is evident in these records, solidifying his position as a substantial influence.

Titled 'Charlie Moon Sings & Plays,' this album is an homage not only to Chet Baker but also to the records that resonated in Charlie's formative years. The title itself pays tribute to Chet Baker's iconic 1955 record 'Chet Baker Sings and Plays,' where Charlie initially cultivated his vocal repertoire.

With a stripped-down combination of guitar and voice, this project reflects Charlie's evolution from a student seeking gigs to an artist confidently navigating the realms of jazz standards—a journey influenced by the legacy of Chet Baker, and the indelible guitar stylings of Barney Kessel.
