Target Audience

This course is relevant to all staff in CIT who engage with students on a day-to-day basis, including academic and research supervisors and heads of function looking to enhance their people management skills.

Course Description

CIT have consulted with the European Coaching and Mentoring Council (EMCC) to provide CIT staff with an opportunity to attend an accredited EMCC Foundation Level Course in Coaching.and potentially achieve their individual EMCC Foundation Level Coaching Accreditation through this programme.

This course comprises four modules and will be offered over 4 weeks as follows:

Module 1 – Introduction to Coaching for Higher Education

This module will give participants the opportunity to learn and practice practical coaching tools and techniques to move people toward solutions.

On completion of this workshop participants will:

- Understand the role of a coaching skill set in a mentoring relationship

- Know how to structure a coaching conversation using the GROW model

- Be able to apply appropriate adult learning principles to their coaching

- Understand the role of contracting in building a trust-based relationship

- Understand the EMCC coaching and mentoring competency framework and how it is applicable in a coaching/mentor session

Module 2 - Developing Coaching Communication Skills for Higher Education

This module is designed to develop an understanding of self and focuses heavily on the communication skills of listening and questioning.

On completion of this workshop participants will:

- Have assessed their ability to listen and learned techniques to develop their listening

- Better understand how to self-manage with a view to functioning more effectively

- Have a greater knowledge of how questions may be use effectively to move conversations forward

- Understand the Global Code of Ethics in Coaching

- Have experience of conducting a coaching conversation

Module 3 - Using Coaching Strategies in Higher Education

In this module participants will practice ways of offering feedback effectively and use feedforward strategies to promote expectation management.

On completion of this workshop participants will:

- Have examined the role of a coaching skill set in a mentoring relationship

- Understand the role of feedback in promoting awareness and learning

- Have practiced techniques to raise awareness and insight

- Have an improved coaching skill set through practice

Module 4 - Using Coaching to Motivate Individuals/Teams in Higher Education

This workshop examines the link between coaching and motivation and how a coaching skill set can influence people’s motivation levels. Options for further professional development through coaching will be explored and the concept of clean language is introduced.

On completion of this workshop participants will:

- Be able to distinguish between coaching and motivating

- Better understand how coaching can be used to improve motivation

- Have assessed their options for developing their mentoring and coaching skills

- Have been introduced to the basics of using clean language

- Have had experience of reflective practice and supervision and its importance in the coaching/mentoring profession.

How to become acredited as an EMCC Foundation Level Coach?

On completion of this course, participants may, if they wish with the assistance of CIT TLU, to apply for their own individual accreditation as an EMCC Foundation Level Coach which requires individuals to evidence:

  • 20 hours of study including 10 hours practice within three months of course completion (i.e. completion of the above CIT course together with 10 hours of practice within 3 months of course completion)
  • 50 hours coaching experience (which can include the 10 practice hours and could be up to 2 years prior to taking the course)

  • 16 hours of continuing professional development over one year

  • Be supervised by an EMCC accredited mentor/coaching supervisor for a period of 1 year within 2 years of completing the above course.

  • Their compliance with EMCC Global Code of Ethics

Presenter Biography

Ruairí Ó Céilleachair is currently leading the Staff Mentoring Programme for the Teaching and Learning Unit at Cork Institute of Technology and is also acting as an external consultant to the Human Resource Department of Waterford Institute of Technology as they pilot a staff induction mentoring programme.

Ruairí has over twenty-five years of teaching experience, is an Associate with the Professional Development Service for Teachers (PDST) and a former Associate of the National Induction Programme for Teachers (NIPT).

Ruairí has extensive experience in developing, delivering and assessing teacher education and coach education programmes, having worked with the Department of Education and Skills in Ireland, the National Coaching and Training Centre at the University of Limerick and with sports governing bodies in Ireland, UK, France and USA.

He has unique expertise in enabling organisations, teams and individuals to identify and harness existing strengths and to take advantage of current best practice to make work more productive and enjoyable.

Prior to his engagement with CIT he worked with the Department of Education and Skills and the National Induction Programme for Teachers in the development and delivery of the current National Programme for Teacher Induction. He was a member of the Teaching Council Steering committee during the recent introduction of the new induction model for newly qualified teachers at Secondary and Primary level called Droichead. AS part of this programme Ruairí with a small team, trained over 500 mentors toward their NIPT accredited Mentor award.

Ruairí has designed and delivered accredited coaching courses for the Association for Coaching and the European Mentoring and Coaching Council and has lectured in pedagogical and coaching skills at Coláiste Stiofán Naofa College of Further Education. He has conducted seminars at WIT for the past two years as part of the National Teaching and Learning Forum Seminar Series.

Ruairí works as an Executive Coach for private sector companies. He has published numerous articles on coaching, training and teaching and has designed and delivered hundreds of coaching and training workshops and courses in Ireland, the UK, France and the USA.

As well as being a qualified mentor, mentor trainer, coach and coach trainer, Ruairí holds a MA in Educational Management and Leadership and a Post graduate Diploma in Educational Leadership from NUI Maynooth. He also holds certification in Positive Psychology.
