Hands on workshop with Ashish Dha
Venue: The Model, The Mall, Sligo, F91 TP20
Can you hear maths? Can you make physics sing? Can you turn your computer into a custom musical instrument? Find out through playing with sound in this hands-on coding adventure, exploring the science behind music!
Indian classical musician and creative coder Ashish Dha will use ChucK, a programming language built for music-making, to turn abstract ideas into things you can actually hear. Together, we’ll create sounds, manipulate them, combine them and break them apart, and discover what happens.
What is a ‘pure frequency’, and does it sound at all interesting? What makes some notes blend beautifully together, when others form the ‘devil’s interval’? Why does the sound seem to ‘pulse’ when two almost-identical notes are played together? What are binaural beats, so popular in sound healing? Can we turn a single drum hit into a continuous musical tone, and a note into a beat? How do specific relationships between frequencies shape sound into music?
Along the way, we’ll encounter fascinating concepts that bridge physics, maths, music, and computer science — without needing to be a scientist, mathematician, musician or programmer. No experience required! Just bring your curiosity and a laptop and your own earphones.
Experiment with sound. Play with code. And have fun
