Quiet Music Ensemble brings the unique sonic art of Cork to Dublin city centre.

Cork Scene/Heard explores the sound art scene of Cork through a collaboration with three of its most significant artists: Mick O’Shea, Irene Murphy and Danny McCarthy. These artists are renowned for their visual art and installation work, and each has created an approach to sound that derives from their visual arts practice. McCarthy has been exploring sound as an artistic resource, a philosophical and cultural idea, and as association with certain artefacts (like tape) since at least the early 1980s. For O’Shea and Murphy, sound arose originally from the act of creating visual art — the sound of pencil, pen or brush on paper, material rubbing against material — and has developed into an intrinsic part of their practice from there. All three artists integrate sound into sculptural work and use it performatively.

Mick O’Shea: Praest
Irene Murphy:
FOUND by chance
Danny McCarthy: The Great Listenin(g)

O’Shea, Murphy and McCarthy have created three challenging and beautiful new works for Quiet Music Ensemble, each embracing found objects as a trigger for sonic exploration. Part sculpture, part installation, part improvisation, these are captivating and thought-provoking pieces that offer something for everyone with an interest in art. Catch a free taster in a public workshop at Cork’s The Guesthouse (2pm, 9 September). World Premiere: The Complex in Dublin city centre (8pm, 4 November).

Entry to the public workshop is free. Tickets to the premiere performance cost €10.

Cork Scene/Heard is supported by An Chomhairle Ealaíon/The Arts Council of Ireland.
