Create a Microforest

Create a Microforest

E41 ET86Kilkenny, Kilkenny
Saturday, Mar 21 from 11 am to 4 pm
Overview

Join us at the Acorn Project Native Tree Nursery to learn how to create a thriving microforest using the Miyawaki method.

Join us at the Acorn Project Native Tree Nursery to explore how a microforest can take root and flourish: in one year, a microforest is a densely planted woodland that begins to establish strong roots and early plant communities; in two years, the canopy starts to close as pollinators arrive, birds find shelter, and leaves fall to the ground, feeding the soil; in three years, the soil transforms into a living, thriving ecosystem beneath a layered woodland alive with sound and movement. On the day we will learn about site preparation, sourcing trees, planting and maintenance, and how to design diverse native plant communities that support pollinators and birds year-round. Microforests are not just spaces for biodiversity and a functioning ecosystem, but also a space for people to gather. If you are interested in learning to create an outdoor classroom, or simply to increase biodiversity in your garden, school or public space, help be part of a growing movement across Ireland to restore native woodland cover.

Optional fieldtrip to Freshford to visit a microforest planted 3 years ago.
