Description

“Cross-Hatched” Connectivity in Seamus Heaney’s Late Poetry: Looking Backwards and Forwards, Here and Beyond'

Dr Catríona Clutterbuck will concentrate on the poetry of Heaney’s last full collection, Human Chain (2010). It explores the poet's heightened consciousness of the myriad intersecting strands of his own life journey and of the chains of human relationship across generations, races, and political barriers that continue to shape him. This consciousness comes into play at a key juncture of new alertness by Heaney to mysterious other-dimensional forms of life, for these poems also bring with them “air from another life and time and place”, both past and future (“A Kite for Aibhín”). We will discuss how and why the self in these poems may be made strange to itself, defamiliarized from its usual way of seeing, as Heaney links earth and air, time and eternity, and groundedness and release, in a new way.
