About this event

  • 2 hours

Come to Lixnaw, the ancestral home of James Joyce's family for more than seven decades and join us in commemorating this year's Bloomsday - 120 years on from the day that James Joyce first walked out with Nora Barnacle.

Let's celebrate, and in some style, the life and literary legacy of the town's esteemed native son.

We'll explore Joyce's familial ties to Lixnaw and its historic Old Court alongside local historians.

Let's engage with fellow Joyceans, including a delegation from Drumcondra, Dublin, as they read, recite poetry, tell stories, and sing some songs.

Thomas Moore's melodies, intertwined with Joyce's works, will resound, linking Moore's father, John from Trien, with his North Kerry contemporaries, the Joyces from Lixnaw.

Bígí linn for some serious craic!
(please note that whilst attendance is free, booking is required so that we can prepare well for you - Thanks!)

*** Festivities will continue "downtown" after "official " proceedings conclude ***

I'd heard that Joyce's family moved from Fermoy to Dublin. What is the Kerry connection?

Father of James, John Stanislaus Joyce (1849 – 1931) moved from Fermoy to Dublin where he met and married Mary "May" Murray. Details of the earlier Kerry connection can be found here: https://archive.nytimes.com/www.nytimes.com/books/first/j/jackson-joyce.html?fbclid=IwAR3uO5TOkAL2cH-qcG9GlK
