About this event

The DSPCA providing free educational tours of the to DSPCA Shelter in Ratharnham during the Summer months for all types of groups. We can work with all ages of children and adults from preschool and beyond. We are happy to create an age/ability appropriate session tailored for you.


PLEASE NOTE: If you would like to book a shelter tour for your Special Education Group contact Brendan at brendan.oconnor@dspca.ie please do not book here. We run a separate program for students with additional needs and he will make separate arrangements for you.


This booking form is for groups of between 5 - 15 students only. If you would like to visit us with a larger group please email before booking education@dspca.ie. There must be appropriate numbers of competent adults to supervise each group - we are giving a guided tour and are not supervisors of visiting groups.


Tours are a Walk & Talk format - there is no classroom talk in these Summer Talks. Tours last 1 hour and we ask that groups arrive promptly.


Though we do not have an actual picnic area at present, there is a coffee shop onsite and limited benches throughout the shelter campus. Please Note: Students are not permitted to eat their own food at the Ruff Cafe Coffee Shop. If you want to make arrangements we recommend you contact them directly at theruffcafe@gmail.com.


We would ask you to remember that the DSPCA is a Animal Rescue Centre and we cannot have groups wandering around the Rescue Centre/animal housing areas without a DSPCA Guide.


Our Education service is free but we do always appreciate donations to help us to continue our work caring for sick, injured and cruelly treated animals.

Are Tours Free?

Yes, our Education Service is free but we do always appreciate donations to help us to continue our work caring for sick, injured and cruelly treated animals. Perhaps your group would consider doing a fundraiser to raise much needed money to help us continue our important work.

Are the Tours inside or outside?

These tours are Walk & Talk so it is advised that students and teachers dress appropriately for the weather. We will bring the groups out to see the shelter and the animals in wet and windy weather as safety allows.

Can I bring my pet with me?

NO, we do not allow groups to bring any animals with them to the shelter. Please leave them at home.

Can we donate items other than money?

Yes, we have a list of items we currently need, please email for details education@dspca.ie.

I have very active children, can you accommodate us?

Yes, we would ask that supervisors make the children aware that this is a rescue Centre for sick, injured and badly treated animals. We would suggest an online talk before the group visits us. Please email education@dspca.ie to arrange.

Are you accessible by public transport?

NO you will need to hire a coach to get to us. The nearest bus is about 1 mile away and the roads are very dangerous to walk.

About This Cause

The Dublin Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals mission is to prevent cruelty and neglect of animals through fostering the compassionate relationship between animals and people. It is a charitable, non-profit, independent organisation. It operates in Dublin city and county. The mission is to be accomplished through education, advocacy, community programmes and our rescue and rehoming centre.DSPCA & Community:Behind everything we do lies the unique bond with people and animals. Our work is centred around helping animals but what stems from that is animals helping people. We see firsthand the benefits of owning a pet has and the social change it can mean for people. How animals can enrich the lives of children, families, the elderly and people who face social and mental health challenges. We work with St. John of God, Merchants Quay Project and many other organisations within the community.We rehome over 2200 animals each year through our rescue and rehoming centre.
