About this event

Similar marks and symbols occur in the drawings of young children from all over the world. This fascinating talk with Mary Gallagher will examine the universal nature of these patterns and illustrate how children follow a unique path of development through drawing. Allowing the child the freedom to follow their own path of exploration in art facilitates the development of processes that are fundamental to creativity and that complement learning in number, literacy, music, movement, and drama.

About the speaker

Mary is an educator and researcher in early childhood learning with a particular interest in the spontaneous drawings of young children. She has had a lifelong interest in the work of Rhoda Kellogg, an American educator and researcher, who collected children's drawings from all over the world and whose analysis demonstrated that an orderly and purposeful development takes place. Through her own research Mary has built on the work of Kellogg.
