Where will the event be held?

Our hub will be at the Data Science Institute at University of Galway but it is a hybrid event and we are seeking teams from right across Europe to attend online.

How does a team register for the Mapathon?

Accepted Answer

Teams of 2 to 4 people can enter the Mapathon to win cash prizes. All team members must register individually, then we will send out a team registration form and that's it.

Can my team enter online?

Accepted Answer

Yes. We will keep in touch on the day via Mapathon TV.

Question 5

What is required for the Mapathon?

Accepted Answer

Each team will be provided with an online spreadsheet to discover and list three things for the geographical area they are mapping. 1) Map layers (ie shapefiles) 2) Links to open data 3) Links to relevant policies. Then teams must visualise peatland maps & policy maps using QGIS or other tools.

What geographical area should teams focus on?

Accepted Answer

Generally a European country or region. However, some teams may wish to visualise data for groups of countries or indeed for all of Europe.

How much does it cost to enter the Mapathon?

The Mapathon is an entirely free event. It uses open data and free software.

What is the Heritage Award?

Accepted Answer

A bonus award for the group that identify/pull together policy and working examples of policy that are explicitly concerned with the integration of aspects of cultural heritage, tangible and intangible ( i.e. archaeology,  and related cultural services) in the context of peatland restoration.

The IRC COALESECE/INSTAR+ PROJECT Irish Peatland Archaeology Across Time (IPeAAT), UCC, Cork.

The main sponsor of the Mapathon is the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform in Ireland via the Open Data Engagement Fund.
