Exploring competency based education: A Lexis for collaborative curriculum

This is workshop is funded by the national forum for the enhancement of teaching and learning. The competency-based approach has been identified as a way of addressing the emerging 21st century skills deficit (Surr &amp; Redding, 2016). By offering a broad set of core competencies students demonstrate a wide range of discipline specific and transversal skills. Emphasis is not on seat time or didactic hours but on the application of learning (Kelchen, 2015). This encourages student success as learners are active, participative stakeholders in the learning process.
Furthermore, CBE is seen as a flexible form of learning allowing learners to become autonomous learners, students decide how they would like to acquire and demonstrate the application of the learning associated with each competence. Therefore, it offers a personalised self-paced methodology (Le et al, 2014; Surr &amp; Rasumussen, 2015). It not only offers flexibility in delivery of content but also the learning activities and assessment the learner engages. Competency frameworks provide a guide to allow the learner to self-assess their mastery at a specific competency and make choices about the content which they learn and how to apply it. (Redding, 2016 ). In this workshop participants will1.	Define what is competency based education (CBE)
2.	Evaluate the benefits and challenges of competency based education in HE including 
3.	Explore how CBE can create dialog between students, staff and professional organisations
4.	Explore how to transition a programme to CBE
5.	Evaluate how to integrate learners and professional organisations into collaborative curriculum design using competency based frameworks
