Event Details

The International FameLab Science Communication competition is returning to Galway in 2019!

Book your ticket to attend the Galway Regional Heat on the 21st of February at 7.00pm in An Taibhdhearc.

During the Galway Heat, 14 participants will compete for two places in the Ireland final. Scientists from a variety of backgrounds will offer presentations that will answer a range of questions.

The competing scientists will be given a total of three minutes each to explain their research, or any scientific concept they like to a public audience and a panel of judges. This will be followed by three minutes of questions from the judges and the audience. On the night, participants will be judged on the content, clarity and charisma of their presentation. The winner will be a charismatic presenter who makes the science easy to listen to, entertaining, exciting and who is not only able to communicate the science but who can share their passion for it.

Successful candidates who make it through to the initial regional heat, will be invited to attend the FameLab Ireland Final. The Final will be held at the Science Gallery in Dublin on Thursday 11th April 2019.

What to expect during the evening?

The evening will start at 7pm and will be hosted by Prof. Michel Destrade, Chair of Applied Mathematics at NUI Galway, previous winner of Famelab Galway and runner up of Famelab Ireland 2016.

14 Contestants (see below) will compete and will be judged by a panel of 4 exceptional Judges:

  • Paul Fahy, Artistic Director of the Galway International Arts festival
  • Laura Rigney, Director of Brigit’s Garden
  • Laoise MacNamara, Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Principal Investigator NUI Galway
  • Brenda RomeroGame designer, artist and Fulbright recipient, Romero Games

The scientists taking part in the competition are listed alphabetically below:

  • James Blackwell - Finding brain tumours using ultrasound
  • Michael Brosnan - Rock and roll and the right hand rule
  • Jakub Brzeczkowski - Momentum and martial arts
  • Francesco Civati - Spectroscopy of environment
  • Kerrie Duffy - Knowing me knowing you : the connection between a parasite & its host cell
  • Megan Griffiths - Soothing scales and scutes
  • Cora Lambert - The world’s largest unknown medical emergency
  • Fiona Malone - Blood clots and heartbeats
  • Pól MacFhionnghaile - Tailoring medicines
  • Marta Perez Lloret - Smart nano materials for treatment of diseases
  • Dhaval Salwala - Blockchain
  • Elle Sander - Tiny bubbles
  • Pritish Tidke - The origin of life : biggest conundrum

While the panel deliberates, the audience will be given the opportunity to vote for their favourite candidate and will be entertained by an Interval Act delivered Dr Ana Panigassi, Winner of Famelab Galway 2017 and performer at Bright Club.

Ana is an Obstetrician/Gynaecologist specialised in Maternal-Fetal Medicine and now a full time Science Communicator and her dog, Little Jerry Seinfeld, guarantees she is very funny. Her Show "Horrible Histories in Women's Health" has some interesting little stories about how women's health inventions came about (and the science behind it), and it's funny and gory as you might think. No singing though!
