Event description

Description

United Ireland: how Nationalists and Unionists fought together in Flanders tells the story of how two Irish divisions from the different traditions in Ireland fought side-by-side in Flanders during the First World War.

The men from the 36th (Ulster) and16th (Irish) Divisions might have been fighting each other in different circumstances but found themselves facing a common enemy on foreign soil. This feature-length documentary tells the story of victory and defeat during the battles of Messines Ridge and Passchendaele in 1917.

Few soldiers personified the complexities of Irish history more than the poet and nationalist Francis Ledwidge who died on the first day of the Battle of Passchendaele. His story, along with that of thousands of other Irish men, is told in this documentary which is presented by author and journalist Ronan McGreevy.
