Poems Made by Walking Workshop presented by Hua Xi, Poetry Ireland Eavan Boland Emerging Artist Awardee 2023.All are welcome to a poetry discussion and creative “Spatial Poetry Workshop,” led by Hua Xi and hosted by Poetry Ireland Poet in Residence, Anne Tannam. Location: Room D115 (The Well Room), Ground Floor, The Quad, DCU St. Patrick's Campus, DCUTime: 11.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. on Friday 17th November This workshop will look at poets who centered walking, including works by Antonio Machado, C.S. Giscombe, Richard Long and others. Then, we will make our own poems by walking around. It is part of The Spatial Poetry workshop series, a project by Hua Xi which explores the historical context around place naming and the ties between toponomy and poetry. Poets have historically helped spread the myths of various places as well as popularize and explain common place names. These workshops invite participants to use poetry as a tool to reconsider the language in their landscape. During the workshop, students will create poems using maps and collage techniques and in so doing, reimagine relationships between space, language and belonging. Hua Xi (she/they) is the recipient of the Poetry Ireland 2023 Eavan Boland Emerging Artist Award. The Award is supported by Stanford University and Trinity College Dublin as well as the Department of Foreign Affairs, and the US Embassy, Dublin. Hua Xi is a poet and artist. Their poetry has appeared in The New Republic, The Nation, The Atlantic and elsewhere. They previously won the Boston Review Poetry Contest and was the 2022 Poet-to-Come Scholar at the Walt Whitman Birthplace Association.
