Overview

Join us for another evening of self-hosting talk, open to everyone from complete beginners to seasoned home-lab veterans.

Self-hosting is all about taking back control of your data and your services. Why pay a monthly subscription for something you can run yourself? From replacing Google Docs with Nextcloud, to ditching Dropbox for your own file storage, upgrading from Google Photos to Immich, or streaming your own media library with Jellyfin instead of Netflix and Spotify — there's a self-hosted alternative for just about everything, and this community has probably tried most of them.

Let us introduce our speakers!

From Pi to PC: My Self-Hosting Journey -- Martin Klačer

Martin is chatting about how he got started self-hosting with the humble Raspberry Pi, and how that's grown into a full blown homelab with a recycled PC. He's also going to be chatting about some of the tools essential to his set-up, such as Docker and Cloudflare.

How Securing Services Made Life Easier -- Aisling Krewer

We've got our very own Aisling Krewer chatting about how security with Authentik actually made server admin easier and more accessible for her non-techie friends and family and how it compares to the lightweight alternative Pocket-ID. (Hint: She loves both.)

As always, the event is completely free. We do now have a Ko-Fi for folks who'd like to buy us a coffee and/or help us cover our expenses -- but it's completely optional (and always will be for these types of events!)

Doors open at 18.00, and talks start at 18.30.

What to expect:

  • Two talks from community members
  • A relaxed, friendly atmosphere
  • Door prizes, stickers and refreshments
  • People who genuinely enjoy this stuff at all skill levels
  • Good conversation before and after the talks
  • Anonymous (and totally optional) feedback form. Let us know if you enjoyed the event, if you'd rather we covered a particular subtopic, or if you would just have rather that we spin up FoundryVTT to play D&D instead. (Future event idea maybe?)

We'd love to see you there — register your spot and we'll see you on the night.

Interesting in sponsoring this event, or a future one? Have job openings you'd like to advertise, or maybe you're interested in getting highly motivated IT folks interested in your company? We're looking for one off and regular sponsors. Reach out to us at hello@galwayit.org for more details.
