With over 45 countries introducing new rules on VAT or GST on foreign digital sales, senior executives of digital businesses must now consider tax rules in many countries.

The Global Digital VAT/GST Summit is a unique opportunity for digital businesses to get the latest updates on the taxation of foreign digital services. Our packed agenda features representatives from tax authority and policy organisations, international tax experts and advisors, and digital businesses leaders, who will share best practice on how they manage the implementation and compliance challenges of these new tax rules across multiple jurisdictions.

Event format

What to expect from this event

  • Special keynote address by Piet Battiau, Head of the Consumption Taxes Unit of the Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD).
  • Tax authorities from several countries, including HMRC and Irish Revenue, will provide insight on the key features of their compliance systems & requirements.
  • Interactive discussion, allowing participants to gain deeper understanding of the specific rules that are likely to impact their business or their clients. Topics covered will include registration, filing returns, audits, retrospective compliance, among others.
  • Practical information for digital businesses on systems that are typically impacted by digital tax rule changes. Areas that will be addressed include checkout process, invoicing, pricing strategy, refunds, recurring transactions, treasury, FX and bank settlement.
  • Direct insight from senior tax experts within global digital businesses on how they manage the challenges of complying in multiple countries
  • The key focus of this discussion will be finding ways to keep compliance simple and manageable, while at the same time ensuring that digital business remain compliant - creating a level playing field for all, while safeguarding VAT revenues.

JOHN MCCARTHY

CEO, Taxamo

John is the founding CEO of Taxamo, a leading European technology firm providing a comprehensive global VAT solution for digital businesses globally. Bringing together over 11 years’ experience in global payments and finance solutions in Europe, the US and Asia, John now specialises in working with a range of digital companies to identify the best approach to enable businesses to comply with the new digital tax rules.



PIET BATTIAU

Head of the Consumption Taxes Unit in the Centre for Tax Policy and Administration (CTPA) of the OECD.

Piet is responsible for the OECD's expanding work on indirect taxes, including the International VAT/GST Guidelines and the OECD Global Forum on VAT. He has been included in the International Tax Review’s Global Tax 50 of the world’s most influential persons in tax policy and practice every year since its inception in 2011. Piet joined the OECD in 2011. He began his career as a tax inspector for the Belgian Ministry of Finance in the early 1990’s before moving on to an international financial institution in 1995, where he became Head of International Taxation and subsequently Head of Public Policy. He was also Chairman of the Fiscal Committee of the European Banking Federation. He studied Law in Brussels and Ghent and holds a Law degree and a degree in Tax Science.

DERMOT DONEGAN

Head of VAT policy and legislation at the Revenue Commissioners

Dermot Donegan is head of VAT Policy and Legislation in the Revenue Commissioners in Ireland. He is an Irish delegate at Council Working Party meetings and other Commission Groups. He chaired discussions at Council on the new 2015 Place of Supply rules for Telecomms, Broadcasting and eServices which were agreed during the Irish Presidency. He has worked in many roles within the Irish Tax Administration and spent 5 years in Africa as a Government adviser on GST and VAT.
