About this event

Join us at Russborough House for an enlightening Native Irish Bee Walk in collaboration with the Native Woodland Trust. Led by local entomologist Brian Murray from Bees and Wasps of Ireland, this event promises an immersive journey into the world of Ireland's native bees right on the picturesque grounds of Russborough House, nestled in west Wicklow.

Ireland is home to 103 bee species, each with its unique charm and ecological role. From the diminutive Yellow-faced Bees to the majestic Violet Carpenter Bee, Russborough's diverse habitats have recorded sightings of them all. During our walk, we'll have the chance to observe these fascinating creatures up close as Brian Murray shares his extensive knowledge, honed through years of dedicated surveying at Russborough. To date, Brian has identified 33 distinct bee species on the estate, contributing valuable insights into their habitats and behaviours.

This walk is not just about observation; it's an interactive experience. Participants are encouraged to bring magnifying glasses or loupes, as we'll have opportunities to gently catch and examine bees in collecting pots, offering a closer look at their intricate details. Our adventure may also take us off the beaten path to explore the bees' natural environments, so we recommend wearing appropriate attire and sturdy footwear for the best experience.

We'll convene at the gate pillar opposite the car park entrance barrier. For those driving, parking is available at Russborough House for a fee of €4, payable by card on-site.

Don't miss this unique opportunity to connect with nature and learn about bees' vital role in our ecosystem, guided by one of Ireland's leading bee experts. Whether you're a seasoned naturalist or simply curious about the natural world, this bee walk promises to be an enriching and enjoyable experience.

What to bring

If you have any magnifying glasses or loupes, even an insect net, please bring them along with you as we may catch bees on the walk and view them in collecting pots. Also, we may visit some off-track areas so please wear suitable clothing & footwear.

The walk will end with a small picnic. We'll bring along tea, coffee, juice and biscuits. If you have a takeaway cup, please bring one as we try reduce waste on the day. All are welcome to bring a packed lunch to enjoy.

Meeting Point

Our meeting location will be at the front of the house at 12 pm, looking down toward the N81 road. If you plan to park at Russborough House, the carpark cost is €4 which can be paid by card on site.

Minimum Age

For this particular outing, we will have a minimum age of 6 years old.

Cancellation note

Please note that the hosting of this event will be very weather dependent. If it is very windy or raining considerably on the day, we may need to cancel the event as we are very unlikely to see any bees in that kind of weather. We will contact ticket holders by email one day prior if this is the case.
