About this event

Join us as we celebrate National Biodiversity Week by taking a wonder through our Rinnagan nature reserve in Lecarrow, Co. Roscommon.

Together with members of our local Roscommon Branch, we are expanding St. Johns Wood, an ancient Irish Woodland. This event is a wonderful opportunity to explore our Lecarrow Wood nature reserve nearby to St. Johns, and to witness how we are spreading an ancient woodland one seed at a time together with help from local volunteers.

We will be meeting our little carpark at our Lecarrow Reserve at 10:30 am on Saturday the 18th of May 2024 (Maps: https://maps.app.goo.gl/rCWsdhKpptTP2V1S9)

From there we will take a walk through the reserve; firstly past our nursery, then through the wildflower meadow, the emergent woodland and scrub section, and finally the native woodland which terminates on the banks of Lough Ree. It's here we'll have our picnic and packed lunches before heading back through the reserve towards home.

We'll learn more about the site itself, the special trees, plants and animals who call this native woodland home. We'll also learn about how the reserve fits in in terms of conservation in the surrounding area, and about our local Branch of volunteers who are succeeding in their mission to conserve Irish heritage and see ancient woodlands in the area expand for the first time in hundreds of years.

What to bring:

  • Warm and waterproof clothing
  • Sturdy footwear
  • Packed lunch, water, snacks, sunblock and hat
  • Any medication you may need
  • Your favorite nature walk gear if you have; such as binoculars, hand lenses, field identification guides and swatches

We will be providing tea, coffee and biscuits for our picnic. If you have a reusable coffee/tea cup, please bring this along to minimize waste on the day.

Bathroom Facilities:

W e regret to advise that there are no bathroom facilities at our Lecarrow nature reserve, however the nearby village of Lecarrow is under 7 minutes drive from the site.

Cancellation Note: Events may be cancelled on short notice if there are adverse weather conditions or weather warnings in place. In the event that we do cancel an event on short notice, we will send an email to inform you as early as possible.

We really appreciate your support. You'll be helping us to achieve our mission not only to conserve the ancient woodland tree and shrub genetics found within St. Johns Wood, but helping us to spread the woodland into our nearby reserve, and among other landowners and groups nearby.
