Event description

Description

On the 1st of May 2019 you are invited to a public meeting in the Connacht Hotel from 7pm to 9pm to highlight your priorities as a Galway resident for Local Elections 2019. At this meeting all disabled people and their families, will have an opportunity to come together and highlight our requirements for candidates contesting the Local Elections 2019. Ireland has recently witnessed historic change in terms of equality in society, yet today many disabled people are still forced to live on the margins of our society, denied any real independence or opportunity to contribute. This year we believe that the time has come to secure independence and equal rights for all our citizens.

This public meeting has been called by the newly established Galway Activism Group, which works to provide an independent voice on disability issues in Galway. Supported by Independent Living Movement Ireland the group is open to any individual with a disability in the Galway area. Group member, Dr James Casey, explains that the upcoming meeting on May 1st is important because “Our politicians need to understand that disabled people can speak for themselves. It is a matter of equality, not wasted resources and charity. We are not asking for a significant increase in spending, but a better use of these resources. So much is frequently wasted by assigning funding to large charities and NGOs and, more often than not, disabled people see little positive effect in their real world lives. On the 1st of May we are inviting all local election candidates to explain how they will work with us once elected to protect our most basic human rights”.

Ireland has a poor record in offering equality to disabled people. Cuts to the Personal Assistance budget, inaccessible public transport, lack of accessible public spaces, poor employment opportunities, absence of accessible public information and inadequate housing are just some of the critical issues that disable us and prevent us from participating in society on an equal basis to everybody else. Galway Activism Group are now calling on all the candidates to clearly and unambiguously explain how they will prioritise and ensure that disabled people and their families, will be afforded the same equal rights as everyone else.

James emphasises that “it is vital that disabled people, our supporters, families and friends come together on the 1st of May to take this opportunity to raise these vital issues in person with our local election candidates. Nobody can speak for us but ourselves. We know what we need and this is our opportunity, as voters and citizens, to say it”. This meeting will run from 7pm to 9pm in the Connacht Hotel on the Dublin Road, who are kindly sponsoring the event. Light refreshments will be provided. All City and County Local Election candidates are formally invited to attend.
