Description

Healthy future spaces: Back-casting workshop to determine what communities want from their nearby green environment in terms of health and wellbeing

Objectives. To determine what communities want from their nearby green environment in terms of health and wellbeing

This practical workshop is open to a diverse mix of representatives and may include community based groups or a Public Participation Network, other voluntary organisations, local authority, recreational interest groups, environmental groups, health professionals. Practice-oriented participatory workshops like this have been used successfully when behavioural changes or transitions are required i.e sustainable consumption practices. The benefit of Practice-oriented participatory workshops is that people at the workshop co-create the action plan to design and implement a new way of living – in terms of policies, education and attitudes to achieve an “ideal future”. At the workshop participants work backwards from the ideal future of a restorative environment to the present situation; they outline the steps needed to design, promote and use the natural environment as a proactive tool to maintain health and wellbeing. Stakeholders collaborate to identify barriers to implementing the steps and suggest solutions to overcoming barriers and identify key actors involved. This forms the action plan to determine what appeals to communities in relation to restorativeness, health and wellbeing from their nearby environments.

Note: The workshop will include a survey, ranking statements related to Values, perceptions, motivations and barriers to using nature for health and wellbeing.

Outcomes

  1. This is about opening a space for dialogue on this emerging topic in Ireland (the link between healthy places/environments and healthy people/communities) - so the outcomes of each of these workshops run across Ireland (including Donegal, Sligo, mayo, Galway, Kerry, Cork and Dublin) will be brought together and shared at 'convergence event' at the end of the project (late 2018) where the aim is to connect the dots and create opportunity to catalyse the ideas through a more networked approach. Not just within local communities but across and between communities too.
  2. Outcomes from the project are co-designed by everyone involved and will reflect people's practical experience so any nature-based solutions/outcomes should have relevance and meaning at a local as well as national level.
  3. As it's funded by the EPA and HSE there is potential for the project outcomes to feed directly into recommendations for policy change. Any material co-created at the workshops will ultimately help shape how we engage with and use outdoor spaces for health and wellbeing.
  4. Everyone's contributions at these workshops will be included in a summary report which will feature / spotlight a variety of nature based programmes, initiatives and solutions.
