Event description

Description

This conference will consider how to make the policy-making process in Ireland more effective. The first session will focus on two particular policies: the local property tax and water charges while the second session will examine the policy-making process more generally.

There is a good deal of analytical attention paid to the effects of public policies in Ireland and to the macroeconomic context in which they are set, but there has been very little analysis of the policy-making process: how policies are conceived, designed, implemented, communicated and reviewed. The report that will be launched at this conference is an attempt to address this gap. Essentially, it is a forensic look-back at two recent policy initiatives from a policy-making process perspective and to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the policy-making process in Ireland with a view to suggesting how the quality of policy-making might be improved.

This conference is aimed at a general audience, including academics and students, local politicians and business people, as well as members of the general public.
