Frequently asked questions

What is the definition of a Senior Quartet?

Each member of the quartet competing must be age 55 or older, and the sum of the accumulated ages of the quartet must equal or exceed 240 years. These requirements must be met on the basis of birthdays reached on or before the day of the first day of convention. Applies to IABS member quartets only.

What is the definition of a Novice Quartet?

A novice quartet is defined as a quartet which has no more than 2 members who have previously competed together in a quartet at an IABS Quartet contest, and has no member who has previously won the IABS quartet contest in another quartet. Applies to IABS member quartets only.

What Youth Categories are available?

This year IABS is running a 'Here to Harmonise' Youth Event which includes "Contest" for quartet and chorus (programme to include 2 contestable barbershop songs) as well as the Festival events (only require 1 of 2 songs to be a contestable Barbershop arrangement).

What is the difference between Junior and Youth categories?

In a Junior quartet/chorus, all members are in school and under the age of 19 (not including the director). In a youth quartet/chorus, all members are aged 25 or under (not including the director). For clarity, entries in this convention are designated clearly by age.

How do I know if an arrangement is contestable?

There are various resources for determining this. Usually this can be checked when purchasing music. If in doubt, contact the arranger or request a review from a BHS judge. Contact IABS if you need more clarity or assistance.
