About this event

After a fantastic start to our 3-Day Carving Workshop over the Autumn and Winter of 2023, INStone are delighted to announce our upcoming dates for the first half of 2024!

On this three day course you will learn the skills needed to create your very own stone sculpture to take home. Taught by Colin Grehan, a master sculptor in Stone and qualified tutor, you will be shown how to use traditional carving techniques to shape your own piece of Portland Limestone into a detailed relief design or three dimensional form using templates and examples.

Colin is a Tipperary native now based in Galway and is well known for his large public sculptures, such as the amazing Bull and Plough sculpture on the once N7 Nenagh Bypass/M7 Motorway and the Bull sculpture in the main square in Navan, Co. Meath. Colin is currently the lead artist and education facilitator at INStone, and is responsible for the carving of the replacement capitals for the Four Courts in Dublin including the training and oversight of apprentice stone carvers for this project.

On this three day course, you will be provided one-to-one tuition from one of Irelands leading stone sculptors. All necessary hand tools will be provided over the three days, and each participant will be supplied with their very own piece of Portland Limestone - a fantastic soft stone to begin on your stone carving journey.

All participants should ensure to wear Safety Boots/Shoes and comfortable warm work clothes on the day. Participants must also bring pencils, sharpener, ruler etc.

Participants are asked to bring their own packed lunch with them for the day, as the centre is based in a rural setting.

This course welcomes all skill levels and beginners are encouraged to attend as step-by-step guidance will be given.

Source Material: Participants are asked to research examples of relief stone carving in the build up to the course, and have their designs ready for course - this will ensure more time spent learning the techniques of stone carving.

E ach day will run from 10am - 4pm
