About this Event

International Festival for Irish Harp: Stars Align : DIT Harp Ensemble, Fiachra Ó Corragáin (harp), Zoe Conway (fiddle) and John McIntyre (guitar)

DIT Harp Ensemble is the creation of Denise Kelly and Dr Cliona Doris of DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama. It consists of eight of their students, studying within the Masters and Bachelor degree in the DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama in Dublin. Since their formation the group has performed internationally at the Edinburgh Harp Festival, and featured at the Wales Harp Festival 2017 where they mentored workshops on traditional Irish music and also headlined in the closing evening concert. The Harp Ensemble played for the HRH Prince of Wales in Hillsborough Castle on his visit in 2016, and have performed widely across Dublin in venues such as the Unitarian Church, Stephen's Green as part of the 1916 Rising Commemorations, as part of the Culture Night celebrations in St Werburgh's Church and in the Royal College of Physicians.

Fiachra Ó Corragáin is a composer, musician, and researcher from Co. Cork and the harp is his main instrument. In 2016, Fiachra was conferred with a PhD in composition from UCC as the youngest doctoral music graduate in the university's history. Fiachra has released two albums of harp music, Hidden Gems and The Enchantment. Fiachra has composed and produced music for Ériu Dance Company's Walls Talk and Salomé, and for the Canadian short film Sídhe. In 2018, Fiachra was commissioned to compose and perform Planxty Prince Charles in honour of the visit of Prince Charles to Cork. Fiachra has been involved in historical musical conservation of the Henebry/O'Neill collections, arranging pieces from Captain Francis O'Neill's collections, and developing and recording an online rendering of Edward Bunting's entire first publication of music, including a full portfolio of recordings, buntingarchive.ie. Fiachra's online harp videos have garnered over half a million views.

Zoe Conway and John McIntyre

With an exciting blend of eclectic fiddle and guitar music, Zoë Conway and John Mc Intyre bring to the stage sympathetic arrangements of traditional Irish music, compositions and songs, old and new. The husband and wife folk duo possesses a rare facility to draw pieces into their repertoire from other genres such as classical, jazz and world music and express this material in way which not only displays the sheer range and knowledge of both instrumentalists but also exhibits the wonderful versatility of their instruments. They have released two recordings to date: Live in Concert, a superb collection of live European performances, and their debut duo album, Go Mairir i Bhfad (Long Life To You), received 5 stars from the Irish Times.

“Simply one of the best folk duos on the planet” (BBC)
