About this event

The Irish Family Planning Association (IFPA) and the All Party Oireachtas Interest Group on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) are pleased to invite you to the launch of the flagship annual State of World Population report of UNFPA, the United Nations sexual and reproductive health agency.

The 2024 report, Interwoven Lives, Threads of Hope: Ending inequalities in sexual and reproductive health and rights, argues that to end inequalities and create a more just future for all, we must take urgent action to ensure the rights and choices of those furthest behind. Health systems must move towards providing services that do not just treat people but empower them, respond to their diversity, and respect their rights and bodily autonomy.

This year’s launch has particular significance as the international community commemorates the 30 year anniversary of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD). At this conference, 179 governments, including Ireland, adopted a landmark Programme of Action that firmly established sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) as core human rights and gender equality issues.

This year offers an opportunity to reflect on how far we have come in achieving SRHR for all, 30 years on from ICPD. Moreover, as we mark this global anniversary, it is timely to reflect on Ireland’s journey towards the progressive realisation of sexual and reproductive rights and gender equality, and Ireland’s role as a champion of human rights and the Sustainable Development Goals.

An Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Micheál Martin TD, will launch the flagship report and its key findings will be presented by UNFPA Principal Advisor for International Development Finance, Ms Jacqueline Mahon. The event will be chaired by a member of the All Party Oireachtas Interest Group on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights.
