About this event

Join us at this in-person workshop to get top tips, share experiences and learn from examples of good literacy friendly practice.

In Ireland over 500,000 adults struggle with reading and understanding information and using everyday maths.

This can mean they may not feel comfortable or confident joining groups and clubs, doing courses, accessing services or applying to be a volunteer.

Is your organisation doing what it can to break down these barriers for service users, volunteers and staff?

Many adults in Ireland experienced educational disadvantage and may have left school with low confidence and unmet literacy, numeracy and digital literacy skills.

Despite a huge wealth of skills and experience people who struggle with literacy and numeracy tasks may not put themselves forward for groups, volunteering opportunities or jobs. It’s critical all people who have experienced educational disadvantage feel welcome and comfortable in the community and voluntary sector.

The workshop will cover:

  • the experience of having unmet literacy needs as an adult,
  • NALA’s literacy friendly standards,
  • how to communicate effectively,
  • examples of good literacy friendly practice, and
  • literacy supports in Ireland
