BLOCK T Skillsets Presents // Machine Sewing for Beginners & Improvers // A 4 Week Course with Liesel Reimer // Starts Monday, October 17th, 19:00 - 21:00
As it’s the season for making costumes and making gifts, we have put together a short 4 week course on decorative sewing that will allow you to put those finishing touches to your sewing projects! Tutors Liesel Reimer and Kathie Friesen will introduce the fundamentals of machine sewing, developing 3 decorative sewing techniques while making projects worthy of gift giving.
Week 1 is a basic introduction to machine sewing, developing all the core skills necessary for weeks 2,3 & 4. So if you are a complete beginner, or even an improver looking to build on what you already know, this 4 week course is the perfect next step on your sewing journey - All machines and materials will be provided!
WEEK 1 - Monday, 17th October: MACHINE BASICS
Suitable for people who have never used a sewing machine but want to learn the basics of how they work. By the end of this class you will be able to:
- Understand basic sewing terms
- Thread a sewing machine
- Wind a bobbin
- Troubleshoot common machine problems
- Sew straight and zigzag seams
- Sew pivot corners
- Change a needle
Building on these new skills, weeks 2, 3 & 4 will look at increasing your confidence with a sewing machine.
WEEK 2 - Monday, 24th October: APPLIQUE
Guest instructor, Kathie Friesen, will join us from Canada to teach beginner’s technique for applique! Applique is a method of applying one fabric onto the right side of another. It is a technique that can be used for anything from applying superhero emblems on costumes, to small embellishments on home décor projects, to large wall art.
WEEK 3 - Monday, 7th November: DECORATIVE MACHINE STITCHES
Even many of the most basic domestic sewing machines have a variety of stitches that seem to never get used. Decorative stitches are used to add interest and complexity to make simple projects stunning.
WEEK 4 Monday, 14th November: APPLYING TRIM
Lace, fringe, pompoms, ribbon … trim can completely change the look of your project, whether it is home décor, clothing or personal items. In this class we will explore different types of trim and learn different techniques for applying them.
COURSE FEE €125
* We take a break on Monday Oct 31st for Halloween!
** If you already know the basics you can skip week 1 and join us for weeks 2, 3 & 4 - choose the ''improvers'' ticket option!
All machines and materials will be provided. If you would prefer to bring your own fabric we can give you a list of materials.
About the tutor: Liesel Reimer has been sewing since she was a child. Her love for sewing finally took off when she was a teen taking fashion design in school and designing costumes for school plays.
