About the new Fota Education, Conservation and Research Centre:

The new centre, co-funded by the Government via the OPW, has been built with sustainability at the forefront of its design and day-to-day operations.

The use of passive design elements and sustainable materials has been incorporated throughout the centre:
• The installation of 96 solar panels has reduced the centre’s energy usage to close to net zero, meaning it produces as much electricity as it consumes.
• High efficiency lighting and HVAC systems are controlled through a digital control system, which helps save energy.
• The centre is heated using an energy-efficient air conditioning system.
• The use of Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified wood products and low-energy production concrete promotes sustainable forest management, protects water quality, and prevents the loss of natural forest cover.
• Bat-friendly lights and bird-friendly acid-etched glass help prevent and deter window strikes.
• Landscaping with 40 species of native plants requires less irrigation and provides food and shelter for native wildlife, including native juniper, Scots pine, Cork sedges, and strawberry trees.
• The Wildlife Garden will provide shelter for a variety of insect species and birdlife and includes an apiary for native bees and a series of bug hotels.
• Rainwater, collected from the roof, is stored in a 10,000-gallon underground storage tank and is used to flush toilets and urinals.
• External Living Walls – helping to promote biodiversity, air purification, and effective insulation.
• Recycled materials have been used where possible, both internally and externally.
