Michael Hurley

Born and raised in Leeds England to Mayo and Galway parents, Michael’s father was a flute player and taught him and his three brothers to a high standard.

Michael has been teaching in the Coleman Centre in Gurteen, County Sligo since it first opened, and has produced many champion musicians, céilí bands and groups over the years. In recent times, his classes at the Coleman Centre for adults have proven very popular and are very well attended. Michael also teaches a range of instruments to children here in Tubbercurry during the year and leads a monthly session locally for children and young people, followed by a music session for adults.

Michael has taught flute at the summer school in previous years before taking over the mantle more recently of the Mixed Melody Instruments Workshop for adults. Players of all levels are welcome to sign up for this class and can look forward to developing repertoire and technique while also enjoying the experience of music making in a group/session setting.

Last but not least Michael is also the flute player for the Swallow’s Tail Céilí Band, one of Ireland’s top Céilí Bands and the band playing at the opening céilí of this year's South Sligo Summer School, an event not to be missed.

The South Sligo Summer School was founded in 1987 in Tubbercurry, Co. Sligo to conserve and promote the rich tradition of music, song and dance of the area. With a full programme of classes, workshops, céilithe, concerts, recitals and talks, there is special emphasis on the old Sligo traditional style of playing.
