About this event

We will begin the walk at the entrance to Carrickbrennan graveyard the reputed site of an 8th century monastery, passing the 14th century Castle, proceeding up Mounttown (Gamble’s Hill) towards the site of the old Racefield. We will then proceed down Knapton Rd., Sloperton and deVesci Terrace, returning to the Ring along the Crescent. We’ll hear about the early monks of Monkstown; the history of the castle; how streets got their names; the curious crest above de Vesci Terrace; the unique design of the Crescent; a German spy; learn about benchmarks and hear a forgotten poem about a famous cow from Mounttown!
