Event description
Persian/Irish quartet Nava launch their latest release, "Sojourns: Volume 1" in the intimate surrounds of Studio 10, Wicklow Street.

About this Event

Nava release their eagerly awaited follow up to 2017's "Tapestry", entitled "Sojourns: Volume 1" with a performance at Studio 10, Wicklow Street.

After a 2018 which featured performances at Celtic Connections, The Masters of Tradition Festival, Doolin Folk Festival and WOMEX Gran Canaria among others, Nava spent early 2019 experimenting, writing and arranging a host of new material, continuing their groundbreaking exploration of their respective backgrounds in Irish and Persian music.

Recorded with Adrian Hart (I Draw Slow) and produced by Tony Byrne (Julie Fowlis, Danu) "Sojourns: Volume 1" is the first in a two part release that expands on the sonic territory covered in Tapestry.

Divided into two long form pieces, it sees the quartet explore the relationship between long-form Persian Classical music and Irish sets of tunes, while incorporating influences from contemporary classical music, Iranian folk music, and condensing this into a host of new compositions.

"We've gradually become accustomed to playing longer pieces as we've been writing, improvising and performing..." notes banjoist with the group Paddy Kiernan, "and the material on the new record is a reflection of an increasing understanding of one another's musical capacities as we've continued to develop our sound together."

The debut single from the recording, "Cerulean" weaves contemporary classical and Irish trad influences into a mesmeric piece that indicates the continued development of the ensemble’s unique sound.

“The composition of Cerulean was influenced by minimalism, and impressionism…” says santoor player with the group Shahab Coohe, “and the title and atmosphere of the piece relates it visually to the blue colour of the sea.”

The band’s exploration of Irish music continues also, with a set of Irish tunes contributed by Shahab’s brother Shayan, who plays tar, tombak, bass clarinet, and tanboor on the recording.

“Since I started playing with Nava, my understanding of Irish music has become much deeper in terms of the approach to playing tunes and ways of composing them. I've been very inspired by many musicians and their variety of styles. The pieces that I composed on this album are a reflection of my experiences that I wanted to explore through different kinds of tunes: the jig, reel and polka have many similarities in terms of rhythm and melody with Persian music. Our interpretation of the track "Cucanandy" was inspired by the sound of the Gloaming, who are a big influence of ours.”

For the recording, Nava rekindled their partnership with one of Ireland’s top sound engineers, Adrian Hart, alongside Tony Byrne in a production role. Guitarist Niall Hughes reflects:

“Having a trustworthy outside pair of ears to help with the recording process was really useful for us on 'Tapestry'. Tony Byrne and Adrian Harte, who are both wonderful musicians in their own right, were brought on board again for this release. Their meticulous nature and honesty were beyond helpful in getting the music to sound its best”.

Nava are now looking ahead to a busy 2020 with performances both across Ireland and internationally, continuing to amaze and inspire audiences with their spellbinding blend of cross-cultural music.

"Sojourns: Volume 1" is available for general release on 22nd November, with the Dublin launch at Studio 10, Wicklow Street on Friday 13th December.
