Otto becomes emperor before he becomes a man – he falls under the influence of his mother, a Byzantine princess, of Gerbert, a visionary French philosopher, of Ekkehard, a conservative German noble, of Nilus, an ascetic monk and somewhere underneath the rules and duties of leadership, and those conflicting influences, he is still fourteen. And then sixteen, and twenty one – and fighting the same battles over and over again, with no discernible way out. 'Otto' is an at times accurate historical drama about adolescence, the past, the future and trying to pronounce the name Bolesław.
