Overview:

As an organisation deeply rooted in our community's history, Outhouse LGBTQ+ Centre has proudly supported LGBTQ+ people for decades. However, we also recognise the importance of critically analysing where we have fallen short and strive to improve.

We are aware of some of the many challenges faced by disabled, neurodivergent, and deaf LGBTQ+ people - whether it's accessing LGBTQ+ spaces like Outhouse, being considered in the creation of LGBTQ+ social events and support services, or being centred in discussions and decisions that impact their rights.

With this in mind, we invite all members of our LGBTQ+ community, particularly those who are disabled or have additional access needs, to join us at our upcoming town hall meeting on Thursday, 9 May, at 6:00 pm.

Whether you have insights into the sensory experience, physical access needs, or digital accessibility, your input will shape our plans and activities. Together, we will build a more inclusive and welcoming LGBTQ+ Centre.

Event Planning Process:

In planning the Town Hall meeting, we consulted with several disabled LGBTQ+ activists to ensure appropriate access measures, timing, and provision of pre-event information.

What to expect:

The town hall meeting will be a chance for you to learn from the team at Outhouse LGBTQ+ Centre about the centre's current context, our goals regarding accessibility, and the barriers we face. We are interested in learning about and discussing the challenges you face so that you can share your insights and hopes for the future of Outhouse and the community and ask our team questions openly.

Event Structure:

See agenda section for detailed information of the event's structure.

Event Accessibility Details:

  • The physical event space has wheelchair access, an elevator, and an accessible bathroom.
  • Irish Sign Language interpreting will be provided.
  • A separate quiet space will be available throughout the event.
  • To ensure the safety and comfort of all attendees, masks are strongly encouraged for those who can wear them and will be provided upon entry to the venue for your convenience; this is to protect and support the participation of immunocompromised members of our community.
  • Please be aware that our Irish Sign Language interpreters and speakers, while speaking, will not wear masks to facilitate lip reading for those who rely on it. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in creating an inclusive environment for all.
  • If you cannot attend this event but would like to participate in future events concerning accessibility at Outhouse or disability issues in the LGBTQ+ community, please register by clicking on this link.
