Parthalán: Inside the Creative Process

Join acclaimed Irish singer, composer and twice Grammy-nominated artist Iarla Ó Lionáird and leading Irish musician's Gareth Quinn Redmond and Ian Nyquist for an invitation inside the creative process behind Parthalán.

Parthalán is a completely new live music and performance experience inspired by one of Ireland’s oldest myths and its deep connection to Tallaght.

The performance brings together an exceptional group of Irish artists, led by Iarla and Gareth, who are creating a one-off piece of music inspired by Tallaght and made especially for this Culture Night.

About the workshop:

This special session offers audiences the chance to step inside the creative process and get a closer look at how Parthalán is taking shape.

Through conversation, musical examples and glimpses into the work in development, Iarla, Gareth and Ian will share how ideas emerge, evolve and are shaped through experimentation, collaboration and exchange.

The session will culminate in a Q&A, giving audiences the opportunity to hear directly from the artists about their approaches to making work, the ideas behind Parthalán and the process of bringing different artistic perspectives together. The session will explore questions around memory, place, tradition, authorship, trust, experimentation and transformation, while considering what happens when different artistic perspectives meet.

Whether you're an artist, musician or simply curious about how new work is made, this is an opportunity to get inside the room and closer to the making of Parthalán.

The workshop is open to everyone - from musicians, artists and anyone curious about how collaborative work is made. No previous musical experience is required. FREE.

About the artists:

Iarla Ó Lionáird is an acclaimed Irish singer and composer and twice Grammy-nominated artist whose extraordinary career spans traditional music, contemporary composition, film and international performance. Born and raised in the West Cork Gaeltacht, his distinctive voice has taken him to stages including Carnegie Hall and the Sydney Opera House, and he has collaborated with artists including Peter Gabriel, Nick Cave, Robert Plant and Sinéad O’Connor. He is also a founding vocalist of the critically acclaimed ensemble The Gloaming.

Gareth Quinn Redmond is an Irish ambient musician and one of the leading voices in Ireland’s ambient music scene. His immersive compositions draw on the Japanese concept of Kankyō Ongaku (environmental music), creating delicate soundscapes that encourage stillness and connection with our surroundings. A member of Irish band Throwing Shapes, he has collaborated with artists including Francis Harris and Albert Karch, with his work released internationally on labels including WRWTFWW Records, INNI Records and Sound As Language.

Ian Nyquist is a Dublin-based musician and sound designer whose work has gained cultural momentum through the recontextualisation of traditional source material within electronic production. Described as a ‘folk futurist’, Ian is part of an exciting wave of artists putting a contemporary spin on Irish trad.
