This workshop will introduce engaging techniques and highlight resources to support participatory research. Workshop participants will have the opportunity to experience participatory techniques including Photovoice, Ketso tool kit and participatory facilitation skills. This will be followed by an overview of the participatory research resources available at the Glucksman Library

The 2-hour in person event will be introduced by Associate Prof Jon Salsberg, and three 30-minute concurrent sessions will be facilitated by Dr Susann Huschke (School of Medicine), Lorna Kerin (Participatory Health Research Unit) Erla Harden (Director on the Board of Directors at the Family Resource Centre in Shannon) and Patti Punch (Glucksman Library) as follows:


  • Photovoice methodology (Dr Susann Huschke)
  • Using the Ketso Facilitation kit as a research tool (Lorna Kerin)
  • Creative Facilitation Techniques (Erla Harden)
  • Participatory and arts-based research resources available through the library in UL and online. (Patti Punch)

Jon Salsberg Associate Professor of Primary Health Care Research

Jon Salsberg is an Associate Professor of Primary Health Care Research – Participatory Health Research, at the School of Medicine, University of Limerick, Ireland, and Adjunct Professor in the Department of Family Medicine, McGill University, Canada. He is Course Director for the UL School of Medicine's Professional Diploma in Public & Patient Involvement.

Jon is a public health researcher with a background in health promotion and the anthropology of development. His research interests are in understanding the social-relational dimensions of research partnerships, and how research ownership moves from academia to community.

Jon is co-author of Canada's Guide to Researcher and Knowledge-User Collaboration in Health Research (http://www.cihr-irsc.gc.ca/e/44954.html) and is on the executive committee of the International Collaboration for Participatory Health Research (http://icphr.org).

Jon has undertaken partnered research involving a broad range of stakeholders including patients, health practitioners, community organisations, policy makers and health service decision-makers, and has worked extensively with Indigenous communities, particularly the award-winning Kahnawake Schools Diabetes Prevention Project (http://www.ksdpp.org).

Dr Susann Huschke (M.A., PhD). Research Fellow in Social Inclusion and Health

Susann is a medical anthropologist who researches the interconnected fields of health, gender and migration. She is currently collaborating with the Birth Rights Alliance Ireland on a participatory health research project on medicalisation, autonomy and decision-making in childbirth.

Past research projects included an ethnographic study on undocumented migrants’ access to healthcare in Berlin, Germany; a government funded study on the Northern Irish sex industry; and a participatory arts-based project on the health and well-being of sex workers in Soweto, South Africa.

Susann’s theoretical approach draws on feminist and postcolonial scholarship, with a particular interest in the concepts of consent, choice, and agency. Susann is a part-time academic and also works as a birth doula.

Lorna Kerin (B.A., H.Dip, MCAT) Manager Participatory Health Research Unit

Lorna is Manager of the Public and Patient Involvement (PPI) Research Unit in the School of Medicine, University of Limerick. She is also Programme Manager for the UL PPI Ignite Network grant 2021-2026, see https://ppinetwork.ie/

Lorna Kerin has over 25 years of working in participatory health research, including facilitating multi-stakeholder collaborations to improve healthcare service provision for vulnerable populations and leading area- based interventions to improve child and youth population health outcomes.

Lorna’s ongoing consultancy research work since 2014 involves co-production initiatives with patients, clinicians, community and statutory stakeholders to inform the development of services for children and young people. Ongoing participatory health research partnerships to develop integrated health services for children and young people with the rare chromosomal disorder 22q11.2 deletion syndrome has recently won the national HSE award for Service Excellence. https://www.hse.ie/eng/about/our-health-service/making-it-better/rare-disease-holistic-model-of-care-wins-hse-excellence-award.html

Pattie Punch Research Librarian

Pattie Punch is Research Librarian for Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences and the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance in the Glucksman Library at the University of Limerick.

Pattie is a Law Librarian and European Information specialist, with an interest in international official publications, and in policy research and systematic reviews. She works with Liz Core, EHS Research Librarian on current interests in this domain including research methods, meta-analysis and workflows to support systematic review process with academic integrity.

Pattie is presently working on the information flows and experiences of those involved in Arts performance and reflective practice research, Action, Participative and Ethnographic research in a digital and Artificial Intelligence world. This work acknowledges that sustainability, UNSDGs, rights and diversity are central to the challenges we face to give voice to the individual experience.

Erla Harden is a Director on the Board of Directors at the Family Resource Centre in Shannon

Erla Harden is a Director on the Board of Directors at the Family Resource Centre in Shannon where she was a volunteer and involved in a number of initiatives within the organisation including PPI research projects. Erla is a PhD Chemist with significant experience managing continuous improvement, research and development projects at university and in commercial sectors including pharmaceuticals and medical devices
