About this event

A reading by the author of the widely praised addiction memoir A Hundred to One, and a discussion of the role of creative writing in Irish prisons.

Listowel Writer’s Week has for many decades run a writing awards series for people serving sentences in Irish prisons. Pat Sheedy has twice been a winner of the Writer’s Week Prison Education Service short story award, most recently in 2023 when he accepted his award while on day release at the festival’s opening night. On that occasion he memorably held the attention of the audience with his candour, his story of living with and recovery from a severe gambling addiction, and his experience of receiving mentorship in creative writing in prison.

Pat’s vivid debut memoir A Hundred to One was published in 2023 to critical acclaim. In this event, Pat Sheedy, together with the prison services education coordinator Tom Shortt, and the curator of the 2024 Writer’s Week festival programme Martin Dyar, will discuss Pat’s memoir, and the transformative impact of creative writing in the Irish prison service.
