We aim to build knowledge and skills across front line practice; developing a targeted approach within a shared framework; creating dedicated support and services for families. The project aims to increase the awareness of the needs of families by creating a shared understanding of how systemic issues are impacting on lives and family wellbeing. Through training we hope to develop a knowledge hub, lending to peer support, best practice, referral pathways and a united approach to service delivery. We aspire to creating opportunities for lifelong learning supporting the retention of staff and knowledge in the Dublin 7 and 1 areas.

About the Facilitator:Martin Coppers Collins is Co-Director of Pavee Point Traveller and Roma Centre and has been actively involved in Traveller rights advocacy for over 40 years. In the early 1990s, he represented Pavee Point on the Government Task Force on Travellers, which played a key role in shifting policy from assimilation towards an intercultural approach, emphasising respect for cultural identity and recognising the impact of racism on the Traveller community.Martin was a leading voice in the campaign for official recognition of Traveller ethnicity, which was achieved in 2017. This involved meaningful engagement with international human rights bodies to bring attention to the experiences of Travellers in Ireland.He served as an Irish Human Rights Commissioner from 2002 to 2007 and was a member of the Advisory Committee of the Council of Europe Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities from 2018 to 2022. Martin currently contributes his expertise to the Advisory Committee of Ireland’s National Action Plan Against Racism.The training will cover a range of topics, including cultural awareness, anti-racism, and communication strategies specific to the Traveller and Roma communities. Sessions will address stereotypes, historical context, and practical approaches for better engagement.The training will include:Cultural Identity: Developing an appreciation for the cultural heritage of Irish Travellers and Roma communities, emphasizing the importance of cultural identity.Diversity in Ireland: Acknowledging the diversity in Ireland today.Ø Unpacking key concepts: Identifying and challenging common stereotypes to promote a more balanced understanding.Ø Discrimination: Exploring the different forms of discrimination.Ø Understanding Racism: A deep examination of the various forms of racism and its impact on individuals and communities.Ø Inclusion: how this can be operationalised through targeting and mainstreamingØ Legal Framework: An overview of relevant anti-discrimination laws and policies to ensure compliance.Ø Equality: Equality is underpinned by a strong legal framework that includes a Public Sector Duty.Ø Child Protection and Welfare: Understanding the historical experience of child protection and welfare for Travellers &amp; Roma in Ireland and Europe.Ø Case Studies: Real-life examples and case studies highlighting the experiences of Irish Travellers and Roma.Ø Learning to Practice: Apply informed approaches when working with Traveller and Roma children and families.
