PERFORMING DUBLINERS

a film for Bloomsday

Declan Gorman’s home-made film “Performing Dubliners” has won acclaim both as a celebration of James Joyce’s writing and a homage to the simple magic of theatre .

In the Spring of 2020, theatres all over the world went dark. Gorman, a noted Joyce interpreter, was compelled to cancel the June premiere of his new Joyce show “Falling Through the Universe” at the historic Smock Alley Theatre in Dublin.

Undaunted, he constructed a mini-theatre in his North Dublin home and made instead a 50-minute film about his work over several years adapting and touring the early stories of James Joyce.

The documentary revolves around Gorman’s solo show, “The Dubliners Dilemma”. This widely toured play tells the true tale of young James Joyce and his struggle to have his first book published, with the actor enacting and inhabiting many of the actual “Dubliners” stories.

In the film, Gorman recreates his internationally renowned show, interspersing it with a charming personal account of how it was made; how he hears echoes of Joyce everywhere along the North Dublin shoreline where he is now confined; the places he has journeyed with the play – from his local village of Rush to Mumbai to Oslo to Moscow to San Francisco – and the challenge of moving on to his “difficult second album”, his new work based on Joyce’s “The Dead”.

Filmed with remarkable skill on a home cine camera by his daughter Mona, Gorman’s movie is a perfect introduction for those new to Joyce while also appealing to well-versed Joyceans around the world who have applauded the actor’s achievement in bringing “Dubliners” to vivid life.
