About this event

The programme consists of vital education topics to support the nurse to develop professionally and equip them with the tools to plan, assess, implement and evaluate nursing care. The programme embraces the ethos of lifelong learning and continuing professional development for all nurses. It also affords nurses the opportunity to further develop and enhance their knowledge and skills to support their role as part of the multidisciplinary workforce in the acute hospital setting. Each session has specific learning outcomes and objectives. I have summarised below.

At the end of the programme the nurse will be able to:

· ABCDE ASSESSMENT: Demonstrate the ability to utilise the ABCDE approach to patient assessment in a structured manner while utilising clinical reasoning and critical thinking to question abnormal findings and discuss accordingly.

· NURSING METRICS: Discuss the importance of nursing metrics and demonstrate an understanding for data collection.

· HEMOVIGILANCE: Discuss and demonstrate understanding for managing blood transfusions (prescription to finish), demonstrate how to use the blood track device, Define what documentation the nurse needs to complete and why, and identify the process for the nursing intervention in managing a major haemorrhage.

· IMEWS: Define when to use the IMEWS and discuss how to recognise and escalate a woman with an elevated IMEWS.

· SEPSIS: Define sepsis and the clinical signs and symptoms. Discuss the sepsis 6 protocol and the immediate nursing interventions within the first golden hour. Demonstrate the clinical reasoning and process for escalating a septic patient utilising the ISBAR tool.

· DOCUMENTATION: Explain the importance and key concepts of nursing documentation in relation to local and NMBI standards.

· ASEPTIC TECHNIQUE: Demonstrate the clinical technique of setting up a sterile trolley. Discuss the importance of asepsis. Discuss the importance of catheter care and demonstrate the ability to recognise appropriate methods for infection control measure to reduce catheter-associated infections.

· IP&C: Discuss the different IP&C conditions and the appropriate nursing management interventions. Discuss how to evaluate the effectiveness of nursing interventions. Demonstrate the correct procedure of hand hygiene.

· PEWS: Define when to use the PEWS and discuss how to recognise and escalate a child with an elevated PEWS.

· NIMS: Discuss when to report an incident and the process for reporting.

· MEDICATION MANAGEMENT: Define the procedure for safe medication administration including the 10 rights. This programme will facilitate nurses and midwives in the safe and effective use of medication in their day-to-day practice. Demonstrate the ability to calculate medication dosages. Recognise and demonstrate when to omit medications and report and document any abnormal or clinical incidences.

· DIABETIC NURSING CARE: Define diabetes mellitus, demonstrate knowledge on blood glucose monitoring and targets, discuss diabetes mellitus medications and treatments, recognise hypoglycaemia and hyperglycaemia; causes, recognition and management.

· WOUND CARE: Define the stages of pressure ulcers. Assess wounds. Discuss nursing intervention and management. Demonstrate the ability of evaluating nursing care and documenting in nursing records. Define and discuss preventative interventions of at risk patients.
