Practical Comparative Judgment for Formative Assessment: A seminar facilitated by Dr Eva Hartell

</li><li>How does my assessment compare to my colleagues? 
</li><li>How can I explain to my students how I evaluate their work? 
</li></ul>There are various ways teachers in higher education might answer these questions. One assessment methodology they may wish to learn more about is comparative judgment. With comparative judgment, evaluators follow an iterative process to compare two pieces of student work, identifying which they believe is better. It stems from the work of Luis Thurstone, who in the 1920s found that whilst people find it hard to tell relative differences, they can compare one thing to another relatively easily. There are many examples of its application in education, where comparative judgment has been used to assess creative work, for example in technology studies, STEM and essay writing.
This event is co-funded by the National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education. 
Dr Eva Hartell of Municipality of Haninge and KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden is a partner in a major European funded project - Assessment of Transversal Skills in STEM - being led by Dublin City University via a partnership of the National Institute for Digital Learning, the Centre for Advancement of Science and Mathematics Teaching and Learning (CASTeL) and the Centre for Assessment Research, Policy and Practice in Education (CARPE) .
