This is the third instalment of the annual Reference Symposium for landscape architects, designers, gardeners and trades. This year’s sessions explore how designed landscapes can be functional , equitable, accessible, sustainable, and aesthetically-pleasing habitats in urban environments. While Reference Symposium is typically hosted in Toronto, this year our virtual conference is freely available.
Session 1: Inside References
During the pandemic, healthy indoor environments have become increasingly important. Concepts like biophilic design increase occupant connectivity to the natural environment through the use of innovative products and plantings. Session 1 will introduce the concept of References and will explore how ecological references can be applied to inside spaces. In this session we scour the world for plants ideally suited for life at room temperature.
Speakers: Curtis Eavoy from Allen Gardens + Sam Benvie + Jonas Spring
Session 2: Toronto Seed Strategy:
The purpose of a Toronto seed strategy would be to fulfill the need for a stable, secure and adequate supply of source-identified seed of desirable species in perpetuity, without putting more/continuous pressure on local/small/fragmented wild populations. The Toronto seed strategy aligns with existing city policies such as the biodiversity strategy, and ravine strategy. It also aligns with the work of many other groups in southern Ontario, and could be supported by and integrated into existing native plant and seed programs. In Session 2, get a behind-the-scenes look at the latest developments in this exciting initiative. Check in with the experts who are working to develop the very first Toronto Seed Strategy.
