This conference focuses on building resilience which is a key aspect of maintaining wellbeing. It aims to explore how we can promote resilience in staff, service users and families and examine how they complement each other. This conference will also offer an opportunity to showcase local research and innovation in nursing, medical and health and social care professionals.

We welcome our keynote speakers Professor John Sheehan, Michael Comyn, Professor Suzanne Cahill and Marie O’Haire.


Prof. John Sheehan was appointed as a Consultant in Liaison Psychiatry at the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital in 1995. It was the first official Consultant in Liaison Psychiatry post in Ireland. He was also appointed to the Rotunda Hospital, Dublin as a Perinatal Psychiatrist. He trained in Ireland, Zambia and at Guy’s Hospital, London where he worked as a Consultant Psychiatrist. He is a member of the College of Psychiatrists of Ireland, a Member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists and a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland. He has a Masters of Medical Science in Psychotherapy. In 2016, John was appointed UCD Associate Clinical Professor in the UCD School of Medicine.

He has a specific interest in medical education and is the Convenor of the Diploma in Psychiatry examination which is awarded by the Royal College of Physicians in Ireland and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. His research interests include depression in the medically ill, somatoform disorders, alcohol use disorders and perinatal psychiatry.


Michael Comyn began his career in broadcasting working with RTE the national broadcaster in Ireland, where he still works today as a freelance presenter on topics from ethics, morality, faith and beliefs.

During that time, Michael began a series of studies that lead him towards coaching and training. He has developed and presented training in leadership and communication for over 32 years and formed the Fearless Organisation to foster his interests in the elimination of anxiety and fear in everyday business situations and improve emotional intelligence in leaders. Michael is on the Associate Faculty of the Royal College of Surgeons Institute of Leadership and lectures on Leadership at the RCPI.


Prof. Suzanne Cahill is former National Director of the Dementia Services Information and Development Centre in Ireland and currently Honorary Professor of Dementia Care in NUI Galway University and Adjunct Professor of Social Work and Social Policy at Trinity College Dublin. Suzanne is recognized nationally and internationally as a commentator and expert on dementia matters. Suzanne has recently published a book generating much interest and titled Dementia and Human Rights. She currently serves on the Expert Advisory Group of Alzheimer Europe, on the Irish National Dementia Strategy Monitoring and Evaluation Committee, on the Editorial Board of Dementia, the International Journal of Social Research and Practice and was co-founder of Ireland’s first Alzheimer Café.


Marie O’Haire Leadership, Education and Talent Development Manager HSE West, RGN, RM, PHN HDip, BNS Hons, MSc Health Service Management, ACC accredited coach, Certified Mediator and Organisational Development and Design CIPD certified.

Marie has been working in health services in various roles in Ireland and aboard since 1986. Presently she leads the internal HR Leadership Development function from Donegal to Limerick. This includes supporting staff and managers with training opportunities, coaching services and mentoring where it’s possible.

A Mayo girl, who loves her county she is passionate about enabling services to respond to fellow citizen’s needs, singing in a choir and participating in all things GAA. Her philosophy in life is to make sure that those who come in contact with her leave feeling better.
