River Restoration Workshop & Fieldtrip
River Restoration Workshop & Fieldtrip: Using A Nature Based Approach to River Restoration & Riparian Management
This river restoration workshop and fieldtrip, hosted by the Restore Ballymacraven River Association, is aimed at community groups, individuals, local authorities, state agencies, consultants, and others, interested in developing ideas for river restoration in their local areas. It is designed as a workshop-style knowledge exchange, bringing together people with experience in the field, and those who are keen to learn. Participants will have the opportunity to share insights, discuss challenges, and explore practical approaches to river restoration, including asking the question why intervene in the first place? Other aspects to be reviewed will include planning consideration, establishing a baseline, and measuring success, and communicating the need for river restoration to ensure sustainable, resilient, and ecologically functional river ecosystems. The field trip will review various approaches to river restoration, including reviewing a nature based solutions approach, using large woody debris at scale, habitat enhancement works, instream works, delivering connectivity, addressing alien invasive species, riparain management works, and best practice in climate proofing our rivers.
The event will be led by Ruairí Ó Conchúir, with input and participation from Inland Fisheries Ireland, ESB Fisheries / Sustainable Rivers, LAWPRO, and community groups from across Ireland (Restore Ballymacraven River Asscoation, Castleconnell Rivers Assocation, Lough Atorick Catchment Management Asscoation, and others) that are delivering at scale.
Fees: This workshop and fieldtrip is free for community groups to attend. The fee for individuals, staff reps of state agencies, local authorities, and consultants is €75.
