Event description

Description

The 7th Robert Boyle Summer School celebrates the life and work of one of the greatest Irish born figures in history. It is Ireland's only cultural summer school for adults that examines the place of science in our society and culture. This year we ask and seek to answer "What do we know?"

The school will be of interest to people with an interest in ideas. it is not a science conference and scientists and non-scientists alike will encounter new ideas as interesting ideas come at the confluence of Science, History Culture, Politics, Ethics, Technology and Philosophy. The school is a place to meet new people and new ideas.

We will visit Boyle in his time and also meet with scientists through history to find out what did they know. We will explore modern neuroscience to find out how the brain is equipped to know things. We will consider why distrust and even rejection of science is growing in influence. With experiments on food and drink we will see if we can trust our senses. We will also look at a current revolution of Big Data which promises great advances. But, what do we know now through the unimaginably huge volumes of data collected on everyone and everything. This then prompts the question "What do they know?" about each of us and how harmful might this be?

A range of Irish and International speakers will address this theme and the school will have a nice balance of recreational and social activities.
