Event description

Description

To raise awareness of the importance of healthy workplaces, the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU OSHA) is this year focusing on the management of dangerous substances in the workplace. To promote this topic, the exposure science research group at NUI, Galway have invited Dr Carla Viegas, to deliver a guest lecture on her research on occupational exposure assessment to mycobiota.

Exposure to bioaerosols is a critical occupational issue that requires close attention. Workers in several occupational environments, such as health care, agriculture, animal production, waste management, fishery, forestry, mining, and construction are exposed to biological hazards due to work characteristics. In this lecture Prof Viegas will provide information on exposure assessment methodologies for mycobiota, with specific focus on characterisations of fungal burden which continues to be a challenge to the occupational hygienist. Passive and active methods for the occupational exposure assessment of fungal contamination will be discussed.

Carla Viegas received her PhD in Occupational and Environmental Health from the New University of Lisbon and holds a Masters in Safety and Ergonomics from Lisbon University. Carla’s is an international recognized expert in the field of occupational and environmental mycology, participating in several national and international research projects and the author of numerous research publications/communications in her area of specialization.
