School Tour of the DSPCA

Event description

Description

Why not arrange a free school tour to our rescue and rehoming centre in Rathfarnham?

Learning about animals is fun and rewarding and seeing the DSPCA in action is a must for any group wanting to know more about what we do.

We can accommodate all ages from pre-school up to adult groups and all tours are age and ability appropriate. We are happy to create an age/ability appropriate session tailored to your group’s interests. We can work around any Civics, Social, Political, Science and Career Guidance subjects.

School groups, community groups, summer recreation programs, church groups and any other interested groups can set up a time for a tour of the DSPCA animal rescue and rehoming centre!

Visits taking 1½ hours and this time includes a discussion session in our classroom followed by a tour of the centre including the cattery, dog kennels, small animals, horse stables, paddocks and wildlife rehabilitation sections and weather permitting the perimiter walk.

Our classroom can hold up to 50 students at a time.

Group Leaders Please Note the Following:

  • Please Note: All animals in the centre are here because of injury, sickness or acts of cruelty. We would ask that each student remain as quite as possible and stay with the group at all times.

  • It is asked that the students do not put hands in cages to touch any animal unless previously discussed with the guide. Some of our animals are sick and carry diseases that can be passed between animals/and people. It should also be remembered that some of these animals might react to students by nipping as a sign of fear or stress.

  • The DSPCA is not on a Bus Route with the nearest bus over a mile from the Centre so a bus is recommended.

  • Please be aware that there must be a minimum of 2 adults with each group of students. The DSPCA is a working Animal Rescue Centre and groups must be supervised at all times by these adults. A minimum ratio of 1 competent adult for each 10 students is recommended for all trips.

  • We also suggest that there should be adults specific for each gender of student (i.e.: female students need a female adult/ mixed groups need a male and female adult.)

  • Visits will take approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. This time includes an introductory talk and discussion session in our Classroom followed by a 40-minute tour of the Centre.

  • If this timetable does not suite, please let us know at the time of booking so a different schedule can be arranged.

  • Visits to the shelter are free, however the DSPCA is a Charity and relies on donations to carry out its important work. These donations can be made after the visit if students wish to carry out a fundraiser on our behalf.

  • We have a shop selling DSPCA merchandise and snacks which students can avail of at the end of the visit should permission from the group leaders be given.

  • Smoking is not permitted at any time on the premises.

  • Students should not eat while on the tour and food can only be consumed in designated areas. The animals are also on strict diets so students are asked not to feed any animal unless permission is received from the guide.

  • Please note we run a Nut Free Classroom so please do not bring Nut Products in bags or lunchboxes.

Tours are free (donations always appreciated) and tour visiting hours are Tuesday to Thursday between 10.30am to 12 noon. If you wish to arrange a tour outside of these hours please email gillian.bird@dspca.ie to make a booking.

Unfortunately we cannot accept ANY groups without an advance booking.
