Event description

Description

Have you ever had the experience of working on a campaign, an appeal or a piece of content that just doesn’t seem to connect with your audience?

In charities and campaigns, we’re often too close to our cause to see it with an objective eye. Design Thinking is an innovative method that helps us to break out of our own assumptions, and which ensures that our users' needs are considered and prioritised at every step of a project.

Design Thinking involves conducting interviews with users, brainstorming ideas, and using rapid prototyping to quickly test and improve your ideas. It can be done easily, quickly and cheaply in your own organisation and can be used for any size of project. It’s being used by leading NGOs and foundations such as Greenpeace, Marie Stopes International, and the Bill Gates Foundation, and commercial organisations such as IBM, AirBnB and Lego to bring fresh thinking to the way they work. These organisations are using Design Thinking to create programmes, services, products and communications campaigns.

You don’t need to be a designer, or a ‘creative’ or ‘visual’ type to use Design Thinking - it’s a philosophy and a process that anyone can use.

Digital Charity Lab’s interactive workshop will feature:

  • An introduction to Design Thinking - what, why, how?

  • Case studies of how Design Thinking is being used by NGOs and commercial org

  • As a group, we will do the Stanford Design School interactive crash course in Design Thinking

  • Practical exercises

  • Questions and discussion

Who is it suitable for?

  • Anyone responsible for creating content and campaigns - digital specialists, communications staff, fundraisers, campaigners
  • NGO staff working on or interested in product and service design
  • Anyone interested in innovation and creative ways of working, and ways of improving processes

FAQs

What do I need to bring?

We'll provide worksheets and paper; this is a paper-based workshop so no laptops are needed. All you need is a pen.

What's the refund policy?

As we are a tiny non-profit organisation with limited resources, we ask that if you need to cancel your booking, you give us enough time to re-sell your ticket. If you cancel an event up to a week in advance, we will fully refund your ticket. Events that are cancelled with less than seven days notice cannot be refunded; apologies for any inconvenience this causes.

If you need to request a refund, you can do so through EventBrite.

Is it ok if the name on my ticket or registration doesn't match the person who attends?

Please fill out the name(s) of the actual attendee(s) rather than the person booking the ticket, if they're not the same. If you need to transfer your ticket to a colleague, that is no problem - you can change the name on your ticket by following these instructions.

I would like to bring a group to this workshop - can we get a discount?

If you're bringing three or more staff to this event, we'd be delighted to discuss a discounted group rate. Contact hello@digitalcharitylab.org to arrange.

I'm not with a non-profit - can I attend this event?

Digital Charity Lab events are primarily for non-profits. However, as we've had a lot of interest from agencies and service providers, we are providing a small number of spaces at this event for agencies, freelancers, consultants and service providers, and will charge commercial rates for those tickets. If you are with an agency or a service provider, or are a consultant / self-employed, please book the correct ticket.

The best way for agencies or service providers to engage with our community is as event sponsors - you can send multiple people, and present to showcase your services and expertise. if you're interested in sponsoring a Charity Lab event, contact us on hello@digitalcharitylab.org.
