South East Technological University (SETU) ICT research wing, Walton Institute of Information and Communication Systems Science, formerly Telecommunications Software and Systems Group (TSSG), is a major driver in the emergence of a telecommunications industry in the South East of Ireland. In the last five years alone, Walton Institute has secured funding in excess of €140 million under EU Programmes, making it one of the most successful ICT research institutes in Ireland.
Walton Institute has a proven track record in translating world class research into market-ready products and services and has enabled the establishment of an eco-system of mobile service companies in the South East of Ireland and beyond, creating several hundred jobs directly and indirectly in the last ten years.
The Technology Gateway, funded by Enterprise Ireland, is the commercial interface of the research institute. The aim of the Technology Gateway is to take the risk out of innovation for a company by researching, developing and validating scientific and technological solutions and rapidly bringing these to clients.
To support the Gateway's impact on business', Enterprise funded a diverse range of industry focused testbeds in Walton Institute. Designed to support researchers and companies in developing their innovative goals, the broad range of equipment offers a comprehensive suite of services across sectors such as healthcare, training, pharma, agri and tourism. The labs serve as an interdisciplinary space where researchers and companies can collaborate with software developers and testers to realise their own ground-breaking innovations. These labs are:
- Mixed Reality Lab
- Digital Photogrammetry Lab
- Smart Material and eTextiles Innovation Living Lab
- Satellite Communications Lab
- Quantum Security Testbed
